Windy Hill Open Space Preserve

555 Portola Road

Among the perks of living in Portola Valley is direct access to the beautiful Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. Set in the Santa Cruz Mountains, upon a gorgeous grass-strewn, partially forested hillside overlooking the community, the 1,414-acre preserve is a popular destination for residents and visitors seeking unparalleled opportunities to connect with nature. Foremost are the stunning vistas, which on clear days include views of the Stanford University Campus, San Francisco Bay, Downtown San Francisco, and the Pacific Ocean.

The sprawling natural sanctuary is Portola Valley's primary location for outdoor recreation, including gorgeous trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian use. The most frequented include:

  • Windy Hill Loop: The preserve's centerpiece trail, this 7.2-mile loop includes the Spring Ridge Trail, Lost Trail, and Hamms Gulch Trail. It leads you across several habitat types, including native grass meadows and woodlands. The apex of the trek is Windy Hill, where you're afforded the best views in the preserve.

  • Anniversary Trail: For those with just 30 minutes to spare, this easy, 0.6-mile-long loop is the perfect mid-morning or lunchtime break out in the wonders of nature. The trek offers panoramic vistas of the ocean and San Francisco Bay.
Managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve is a cornerstone of Portola Valley's bucolic, laid-back lifestyle and a natural arena for education, recreation, and environmental conservation. Beyond Windy Hill, residents also have direct access to the 1,193-acre Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve and the 1,400-acre Foothills Nature Preserve, both of which border the community.

Rossitti's Alpine Inn

3915 Alpine Road

Though incorporation occurred in the mid-1960s, the area encompassing Portola Valley has a history of settlements dating to the 1830s. One of the few remaining buildings of that era in San Mateo County is Rossitti's Alpine Inn. Initially constructed in 1852 as the Casa de Tableta, the 172-year-old establishment is California's second-oldest operating tavern, carrying the names The Wunder Bar, Schenkel's Picnic Park (during Prohibition), and Rossotti's Beer Garden throughout its history. Registered as a California Historic Landmark in 1969, the Alpine Inn continues as one of Portola's Valley's most cherished gathering places.

Portola Valley Schoolhouse

765 Portola Road

An ultra-rare example of Mission Revival architecture employed as a school building, the beautiful Portola Valley Schoolhouse is a charming single-room structure and a poignant reminder of the town's long-standing history. Designed by Palo Alto architect LeBaron R. Olive and constructed in 1909, the quaint, remarkably well-preserved building encapsulates the essence of a bygone era when one-room schoolhouses were the heart of community life and learning. Today, it continues to play a central role in the community, not just as a Portola Valley landmark but as an active part of the Portola Valley Town Center (see below), hosting civic gatherings, council, commission, and committee meetings, as well as the town's weekly Farmers Market, held in its parking lot.

Portola Valley Town Center

765 Portola Road

The Portola Valley Town Center proves a quintessential example of how architecture and design can reflect and enhance the values of a community. Set back in one of the most serene, picturesque parts of town, the award-winning complex serves not just as the administrative heart of the city but as a vibrant community hub, embodying the town's commitment to sustainability, connectivity, and civic engagement.

Designed with an emphasis on environmental stewardship, the Town Center seamlessly integrates with the natural beauty of its surroundings, showcasing innovative green building practices and materials that minimize its ecological footprint. The three primary buildings include the Portola Valley Library, the Town Administration building, and the Community Hall; together, they anchor an area that showcases the Little People's Park and Playground, softball field, soccer pitch, and tennis courts. It's a space that supports Portola Valley's longstanding spirit of community.

Our Lady of the Wayside Church

930 Portola Road

Our Lady of the Wayside played a central role in expanding the community by providing a permanent home for the Portola Valley's Catholic Parish. Finished in 1912, the church is a striking example of California's Mission Revival architecture, though Georgian influences provide a distinctive entrance. Our Lady of the Wayside was the first official commission of then-19-year-old draftsman Timothy Pflueger, whose later work would include several San Francisco landmarks, including the Castro Theatre. Our Lady of the Wayside Church earned California Historic Landmark and National Register of Historic Places status in 1977. The church continues to hold weekly mass on Saturdays and Sundays.
